What Is CommuterCash?

CommuterCash is a free app that helps you find optimal commuting options and earn cash and other rewards while you commute! Use the app to find carpool, vanpool, transit, biking, and multimodal travel options. Log your commute trips in CommuterCash and earn points that can be redeemed for cash, gift cards, or transportation credits.

Commuters traveling into the Washington, DC area (shaded area of this map) or anywhere within Maryland can earn up to $10 after completing 20 trips – or save your points to earn higher tier rewards, up to $90 in value. Rinse and repeat. It’s that simple! Up to $600 can be earned per calendar year.

Read the CommuterCash Program Guidelines for more details.

Get Started in 3 Easy Steps

Watch our quick Getting Started video!

1.  Download the free CommuterCash app from the Apple Store or Google Play.

2.  Log in with your Commuter Connections username and password.

  • Don’t have a free Commuter Connections account yet? Click the “Create Account” button on the CommuterCash login screen, create your account, and use your new username and password to log into the app.
  • If you previously used our incenTrip app, use your same login information for CommuterCash. (The Commuter Connections and MDOT Rewards Programs in incenTrip were retired on December 31, 2024)
  • Forgot your login details? Contact us at 1-800-745-RIDE (7433) or [email protected] to reset or reactivate your account.

3.  Start logging trips and earning rewards! Allow background and motion and fitness tracking (set to Location settings to Always Allow and Precise Location is on) in order to verify your trips.

  • You’ll know your trip is eligible for points when all 3 check marks on the Log Trip screen are green, showing you’ve enabled location tracking, are commuting during the peak morning or afternoon window, and your trip is to or from your work address.

How can CommuterCash help improve my commute?

CommuterCash is a comprehensive trip explorer that utilizes sophisticated technology to help commuters in the Washington, DC megaregion (which includes Maryland, Washington, DC, and northern/central Virginia). CommuterCash provides four distinct services to commuters:

1.  Earn Cash for a Smart Commute. Each commute trip that is tracked and logged with CommuterCash will earn you points. You’ll earn more points for trips that help reduce congestion and improve air quality – such as carpooling, taking transit, or biking. The points you earn can be accumulated and redeemed for $10, $25, or $50 in cash (via PayPal), Visa gift cards, WMATA SmarTrip credits, Capital Bikeshare credits and memberships, or Virginia E-ZPass Credits.  It’s basically like your standard credit card points program – except you don’t have to buy anything to earn rewards!

2.  Identify Multimodal Commute Options. Plan your trips with the best travel mode, departure time, and route that save time, cost, and fuel. Suggestions are based on traffic prediction and real-time data feeds.

3.  Avoid Traffic Delays. Utilizing sophisticated technology that can predict traffic jams, CommuterCash will advise smart routing to drivers. CommuterCash can help you avoid day-to-day congestion and traffic jams caused by traffic accidents, work zones, special events, and adverse weather conditions. You’ll receive alerts and alternative travel options in response to unusual incidents.

4.  Monitor Your Impact. Ever wonder about the environmental impact of your commute? CommuterCash helps you track and understand your emissions from driving and even has personalized tips to help you become a better eco-driver based on your driving habits. If you don’t drive, CommuterCash shows you how much you’ve earned in estimated fuel savings and how much pollution you’ve avoided generating.

FAQ

Check out our most Frequently Asked Questions below and review our full CommuterCash Program Guidelines.

What types of trips are eligible for rewards?

Commute trips going to work from home (or vice versa) are eligible. Trips must occur on weekdays (Monday – Friday) during the morning peak commute times (6:30am – 9:30am) or during the afternoon peak commute times (4:00pm – 7:00pm). Only one morning and one evening trip will earn points per day.

How are point values assigned to my commute trips?

You may find your commute trips award anywhere between 10 to 100 points. The program exists to help users find alternative commuting options to driving alone, so you’ll likely find higher point values associated with modes such as ridesharing, transit, or biking/walking as opposed to lower point values awarded for driving alone.

Point values may change over time to reflect your commuting patterns. If you’ve demonstrated superior commute savviness, the app may make it more challenging for you to earn points. Take pride in knowing that you’ve accomplished what few in the region are capable of doing: Finding a smart, sustainable commute!

What rewards can I earn with CommuterCash?

We’re so glad you asked! Here is our current rewards structure:

Why do I need to allow location tracking?

In order to provide financial rewards through this program, the CommuterCash app must be able to verify participant trips. Select the “Always” Location setting, ensure that “Precise Location” is on. The Motion & Fitness setting must also be selected on in order to verify walking and biking.

These background location options provide the necessary verification – only during the trip logging – while still allowing participants to conduct other tasks on their mobile devices. Data collection stops as soon as the trip is ended either by entering the destination’s geofence or manually ending the trip.

Why do I see a leaderboard in my app?

The goDMV Commuter Competition is happening March 3 – May 31, 2025! If you are commuting to an employer in the DC Metro area (Washington, DC, and certain parts of Maryland and Virginia – the shaded area of this map), the trips you log in the app automatically count towards the leaderboards and monthly bonuses and prize drawings.

Learn more about the competition here: goDMV Commuter Competition.
See how the trips you log can earn points for goDMV and your personal CommuterCash rewards balance by visiting our Quick Guide to Earning Points.

If I’m unemployed, can I still earn points?

No. The CommuterCash app is designed to help reduce peak period congestion during the morning and evening rush hours.

Can I earn points for telecommuting?

No. Only work commutes to a physical location within the peak commuting time frames are eligible for points.

Can I log a trip and earn points using an Electric Scooter?

Yes. While not specifically identified as a mode of travel within CommuterCash, scooter trips are recognized and categorized as bike trips within the application.

Can I save multiple work locations in the app?

Currently, the CommuterCash app is only able to accommodate one work and one home address at a time. If you have multiple worksites, you could consider this approach:

  1. Change your work location in your account – log into your account at www.commuterconnections.org, click EDIT PROFILE, and change your work address. Please do this at least an hour prior to starting a commute trip to allow the app to update (you may need to tap the Reload Account button on the app or log out and back in to see the address reflected correctly).
    • If all three eligibility checkmarks are green on your Log Trip screen, you should expect to receive points for that commute trip in your personal CommuterCash balance.
  2. If you are participating in the goDMV Commuter Competition, you may leave your CommuterCash account set to the work address you report to most frequently, and for the other(s), use the “Enter New Address” button in the “Where you are going?” section of the Log Trip page. This trip should still track and end by geolocation when you reach the destination (or hit End Trip if the trip doesn’t automatically end).
    • The trips to/from this work location not stored in the app will not award points in your personal CommuterCash balance currently, but
    • These trips will earn a point each towards your goDMV Commuter and Employer leaderboards and applicable monthly bonuses and prize drawings.

I need to stop somewhere between work and home - how do I log that trip?

In the Log Trip menu, tap the “Enter New Address” button and enter the address for your destination. As long as your trip meets the eligibility criteria (start the trip at your registered work location during the peak commuting window, and allow background tracking – look for the 3 green check marks!) you should be awarded points.

What happens if I forget to log a trip?

If you forget to log your trip, you cannot currently log the trip manually for points.

If you forget to start logging your trip to work and press the Start Trip button along the way, you may still earn points if your trip ends at your work address and you meet the points eligibility criteria.

If you forget to start logging your trip from work and push the Start Trip button after you’ve exited the geofence for your work address, the trip will be logged as a “Regular Trip” and not awarded points as a commute trip.

Why didn't I earn points for my trip?

The main reasons why you did not earn points for a trip that was logged in the app include:

  • All 3 points eligibility criteria were not met
  • You have already met the limit of earning points for 2 commute trips per day

Please make sure your app settings are correctly allowing location tracking and ensure your work address is correct.

If you believe your trips are not being recognized accurately after confirming all of the above information is correct in your account, please email a description of the problem and a screenshot of your Trip History screen to us at [email protected].

I previously used the incenTrip app - what happened to my account?

All incenTrip accounts and rewards points were migrated to the new CommuterCash system in December 2024. Please use your incenTrip username and password to log into the CommuterCash app (contact [email protected] if you need help accessing your account).

Commute trips logged in incenTrip no longer contribute to the Commuter Connections or MDOT rewards programs – please make sure you are using CommuterCash to log your trips for rewards!

It’s been over 45 days since I redeemed points for a reward. What do I do?

Send an email to [email protected]. Please identify the email address associated with your account, the type of reward you requested, and the date you requested the reward.

What other benefits are available to me after registering for CommuterCash?

Upon registering for CommuterCash, you will also be eligible to leverage other commuter benefit programs under the Commuter Connections umbrella program. Feel free to take advantage of our other services, such as Guaranteed Ride Home, free ridematching, and more!

Where can I find the Privacy Policy for CommuterCash?

The CommuterCash Privacy Policy is available on the Program Guidelines webpage.
